ISO-8859-1 doesn't have Cyrillic symbols, I think so.
What encoding should I use? What’s the best choice in this case?

I'll try to look for a solution in this direction.
Take whatever suits you, I will adapt the code to use the encoding. I just hope the fonts have all the characters. Just notify me about what you've decided and I'll map it to "--lang=ru"

Windows1251 (=CP1251) rather than UTF-8, I assume.

How can I test?
End of next week I'll be back from vacation, then I'll create a version for you to play around with, with support for the encoding.

Ok, I've created a modified version for you which accepts --ru and for that assumes charset windows-1251 for the files inside data/ru
You can replace those with your translated files to test.

I've used Wine to run on Linux.

Maybe UTF-8 or KOI8-R.

Have you changed the charset of the files, I've left the original charset untouched. If you use linux you can use the bote launcher and jre from the linux version, just overwrite the desktop-xxx.jar and copy the data folder over to the one from itch.io. The main menu's texts are in the strings.xml. Convert the entire file to windows-1251. If it doesn't works than I will add a parameter to the game to use an option --charset="..." to make testing easier. UTF-16 would be probably the best...

I've just realized that changing the charset isn't enough. The fonts that I use don't support russian well, so we'll have to use for russian different fonts. Btw, I'd go with UTF8 for the text, I'll modify the game accordingly.

For now I've overwritten the fonts with some that support russian, I'm not entirely happy with the main menu font, but for now it will do. The League Gothic is fine.
I've installed League Gothic Cyrillic.
So, I've
1) downloaded the game, unpacked it,
2) opened the file 'buildings.txt' (data/ru/buildings),
3) 'Primitive Farm' (erased the phrase) = 'Простая ферма' (typed it),
4) saved the file 'buildings.txt' (utf-8, League Gothic Cyrillic),
5) started the game (double clicked the file 'bote').
You can test using: ./bote --charset=utf8 --lang=ru --res=1440x810

I've just tested with the same text, using utf-8 and for me it shows like in the picture.
Don't double-click BotE, use the parameters: --charset=utf8 --lang=ru
Use the 0.7.8 version that I've uploaded to my drive, only that one has variable charset and ru support.

I have removed that font and have installed League Gothic from the folder 'font' ('League Gothic.ttf'). The same result, characters look incorrect.

What should I do in order to use the parameters?
Run a Linux terminal, go to where BotE is and run ./bote --charset=utf-8 --lang=ru

Or create a short script like this:
#!/bin/sh
./bote --charset=utf-8 --lang=ru

Save it, make it executable and run it.
